K.C. WHIPPET BREED STANDARD,

" WHIPPETS ARE BUILT FOR SPEED AND WORK "

THE S.P.W.R.C. OFFERS THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT FOR WHIPPETS TO DO THEIR OWN THING.

The Scottish Pedigree Whippet Racing Club.

Racing of KC Registered Whippets began in Scotland more than thirty years ago when
fun Rag racing at picnic meetings of The Whippet Club of Scotland, breed club prompted the formation of a Racing Section to encourage members to SHOW and RACE their Whippets. The Racing Section was later reconstituted as the S.P.W.R.C. with Dennis and Flora Lindsay (Manseburn) and Liz Third (Bruntsfield) among the founder members.

The Club continues to use a handicap system suitable for dogs of all ages and differing racing abilities.

Weekly field meetings are held on Sunday afternoons from Late March to October, Weigh in of dogs 1.00pm-1.30pm and Racing is scheduled to start at 2.00pm.
A member unable to bring a dog within the weighing period please inform a commitee member not later than 12.30pm on the morning of the meeting.

Typically Four dogs run in each heat. The first and second place of the first round of heats go on to the next round of heats until they reach the Main Final. Third and fourth places go on to the next round of heats until the reach the Consolation Final.
Every runner is Guaranteed at least two races (and more after the Finals if time permits)
The handicap system is designed to offer all dogs the chance of reaching a Final. POINTS towards Annual trophies are awarded to every dog competing at these weekly meetings throughout a Season. Rossettes are awarded to the four Main Finalists and the Consolation Final Winner.

Whippets are natural athletes and instinctively chase the artificial Lure. Inexperienced Whippets are given an individual programme. They run on their own and are hand slipped and soon they will readily begin to chase the lure. They are then introduced slowly to the Traps and once they have mastered this, they are then run with experienced dogs to learn to run without interference with the other dogs. Puppies are taught in a similar way but at a much gentler pace.  Only when they reach 12 months of age are they pemitted to  compete with adult dogs.

Anyone wishing to bring along their Pedigree Whippet will find plenty of Experienced people with plenty of good advice
if you wish to start racing or if you just wish to come along and watch you will always be made welcome. Look forward to meeting you someday.
